Help The Blind Owl Band replace their stolen Instruments

On October 23rd following a gig at the Sportsman's Tavern in Buffalo, the Blind Owl Band was robbed. (You can help by donating or buying their albums scroll down)
A thief or thieves broke into their trailer and stole a cache of expensive, rare instruments.
The trailer was parked outside a friend's house where the band was staying for the night when it was broken into.
The stolen instruments include a 1942 upright bass, a mandolin, a Martin guitar, a banjo and a fiddle. In all, the stolen gear is worth between $12,000 and $15,000, said band member Eric Munley.
The Adirondack string band was in the midst of 40 shows in 60 days throughout the northeast. The band is a full-time job for all four members. Last night, they had to cancel a gig in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the first time in the band's two-year tenure they've had to cancel a show.
But Munley is concerned about the long-term consequences of the robbery. As of Friday afternoon, the band was still in Buffalo trying to hunt down their stolen gear.
"We're doing detective work," Munley said. "We're visiting pawn shops, music stores and we've received monster amount of support. People are angry about it."
The band filed a police report with the Buffalo Police Department.
Also among the stolen gear were roughly 100 CDs and band T-shirts. While not overly valuable, they represent a source of revenue for the band.
"We don't even have our merch to sell to make our money back," he said.
And the last item on the list is a lighthearted jab and band member James Ford, who carries a suitcase instead of a backpack on tour. The suitcase was stolen along with the gear. The band refers to it as "James's purse."
"It's us trying to make a slight joke of the situation," Munley said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Eric Munley at emunley88@gmail.comor call him at 518-637-1985.
According to the band's Facebook page, the list of stolen items includes:
  • Weber Mandolin (Gallatin) Light natural finish
  • 1942 Kay Stand up, Double Bass
  • Fender p-Bass Fretless, Black
  • Stelling Sunflower Banjo
  • Martin Guitar
  • Ashdown Bass Head
  • Fiddle, Stratavarious Copy
  • 50 or so Blind Owl Band T-Shirts
  • CDs
  • Hot Sauce

Jeremy Squires NEW Album When Will You Go

Jeremy Squires is a self-taught musician who had a love for music from an early age. He played in a few bands in the 90’s but after taking a break from music in 2001 he decided to focus on family life. The following years were a challenge as he had to deal as he fought his personal demons. However, he used music to turn his life around by originally writing poems which then turned into the music we hear on A Place to Hide (January 2012) and In the Dark (May 2012) his most recent EP, Central Nervous Station (January 2013) and singles "Ghostlike,” and "Oblivious"

On his new album 'When Will You Go' dropping November 9th Jeremy has continued in the same vein as his previous albums by playing all of the instruments, (guitars, harmonica, piano, keyboards, resonator and lap steel)  recording with a handheld recorder, mixing, and producing it all on his own. And, when asked why, Jeremy says,
“I wanted the feeling I had when writing and playing the songs to be authentic in the sound of the recordings.”
With help from Anna-Lynne Williams (Lotte Kestner) singing background vocals and Kalispell's and Field Report's Shane Leonard playing fiddle and organ, Jeremy is able to create songs that are haunting and ethereal exploring themes of death and the fear of losing loved ones.

"The album is a bit different than my previous recordings and has a darker, cleaner and more winter-like tone.  Writing and recording "When Will You Go..." was very therapeutic and I think people will be able to relate more to this album.  Even though it is extremely personal to me, I feel that it can be personal to everyone else as well." - Jeremy Squires

Brothers Lazaroff - Hope, Fear, Youth

David and Jeff Lazaroff could be a pair of telepathic siblings. But it's more likely that the brothers' compatibility onstage comes from playing music and writing songs together since their high school days. The duo carried on composing as a team for more than a decade while David lived in Austin, TX, all the while the songwriters continued to develop their roots-driven sound. Currently reunited in St. Louis, the fraternal front men are a staple of the local music scene and draw crowds all over town.
Besides a possible secret language, the brothers are equipped with earnest songwriting and an earthy sound peppered with jazz-inspired riffs and fuzzy solos. The remainder of the quintet they've led for more than four years includes Grover Stewart on drums, Teddy Brookins on bass and Mo Egeston on keys. Both in the studio and onstage, the evidence is clear that the group has developed an intuition and familiarity that allows each player to create something unexpected.
Brothers Lazaroff was once just a group of friends living in Austin, TX held loosely together by music. Now, a solid band of brothers led by Jeff and David Lazaroff, the group's new album Hope, Fear, Youth is a combination of new tunes and older songs reinvented with the current members. One of the older songs featured on the album is the lead track "Battle Hymn" which was recently been covered by Doc Feldman & The LD50.  Recorded with Jacob Detering at Red Rill Entertainment studio the Brothers Lazaroff were able to capture the essence and the magic of their live arrangements on the album.

Smooth, soulful and innovative folkish country R&B funk with plenty of grooves and a rootsy flavor. I think I'll dig up some of my old The Average White Boy albums and keep this groove going.

Hope, Fear, Youth Track List:
1. Battle Hymn
2. Dance While You Can
3. Row Of Trees
4. Time's Quickly Fleeting
5. Tonight
6. Clumsy And Aching
7. All The Things I Need
8. Union Of The Soul
9. No Water In The Well
10. Pure Delight
11. Cluck Ole Hen

Lou Reed/The Velvet Underground - Download Some Covers

March 2, 1942 - October 27, 2013

Lou Reed, who took rock 'n' roll into dark corners as a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist, died Sunday, his publicist said. He was 71.

Reed, violist/keyboard player John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker played their first show as the Velvet Underground in 1965 and soon drew the attention of pop artist Andy Warhol, who became their manager. Rock mythology has it that even though the group sold few albums, everyone who bought one started a band.

"The world has lost a fine songwriter and poet. I've lost my 'school-yard buddy,' " Cale wrote on Twitter.

In 1970, Reed left the Velvets for a long solo career. He had his only Top 40 hit with "Walk on the Wild Side," from the Bowie-produced 1972 album "Transformer," and Rolling Stone put both that album and 1973's "Berlin" on its top 500 list.
Reed "was one of the first artists to experiment with guitar feedback on record and to show that sort of ugly noise can actually be quite beautiful and moving. He also, lyrically, wrote about all kinds of topics that were taboo before he started exploring them," said Vozick-Levinson.

"People say rock 'n' roll is constricting, but you can do anything you want, any way you want,'' he said. "And my goal has been to make an album that would speak to people the way Shakespeare speaks to me, the way Joyce speaks to me. Something with that kind of power; something with bite to it."

"One chord is fine," he once said, alluding to his bare-bones guitar style. "Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz."

Feel Bad For You, October 2013 (Covers)

Fall is upon us and there’s a bit of a chill in the air up here in the Seattle area, as well as some rain. October has always a fun month for me. I get a kick out of seeing everyone dress up for Halloween, as well as myself. Kids and adults pretending to be something or someone they aren’t. So why not do the same with music? What do I mean? Covers. Cover Tunes. Re-imagining the originals. Get it?
So we have our theme for the month: Cover tunes. No restrictions on year or genre. This is probably the biggest mix tape to date, this year. We have 25, count ‘em, 25 songs in this month’s mix. Rockstar_Aimz wanted to submit 50, but kept herself to 5. I contributed 3, but could have equaled Aimz. And we had a couple of others that contributed 2 each. Why? Because I’m the curator and I make the rules! To say we are all over the map is an understatement. - @BoogieStudio22

1. Title: Love Hurts
Artist: Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris
Album: Grievous Angel (1974)
Submitted By: @toomuchcountry
Comments: On Thursday, September 19, I took in a show at The 5 Spot featuring several of East Nashville’s great singer-songwriters. Included on the bill were Amelia White and Jon Byrd. She reminded the audience the evening was the 40th anniversary of Gram Parsons’ death. Then Byrd sang the Everly Brothers’ “Love Hurts” – a song Parsons recorded during sessions in 1973 and eventually released in 74 as Grievous Angel.
2. Title: It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It)
Artist: Banda Do Sul; Natascha
Album (year): Bossa n’ Stones, Vol. 2 [2006]
Submitted By: hoosier buddy
Comments: There are two compilation albums of bossa nova covers of Rolling Stones songs, and of the 24 covers, this is my favorite track. The breathy vocal, the percussion, the flute trills…confection perfection. Strangely un-ironic.
3. Title: Whipping Post (Allman Brothers)
Artist: The Blind Owl Band
Album (2013): Live at The Shaskeen 2013-08-29
Submitted By: @popa2unes
Comments: BOB is fast becoming my favorite new band. The whole 2+ hour set is available for free on my blog ifin you want it.
4. Title: If You Catch Me Stealing
Artist: Eilen Jewell
Album (year): Letters From Sinners & Strangers (2007)
Submitted By: @tincanman2010
Comments: Pick a fave cover tune? And risk having my 9,000 other faves organize a coup against me? Nice try, bastard. This is an original that stitches together several of Jewell’s favourite Bessie Smith songs. I trust it will keep everybody happy.
5. Title: Telephone (Lady GaGa)
Artist: The Morning Pages
Album (year):
Submitted By: Bryan Childs (
Comments: Not my “favorite” cover song ever but it is a fun one.
6. Title: Down By The River
Artist: Indigo Girls
Album (year): Live bootleg, Bogart’s, Cincinnati, OH, April 13, 1993
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: Haters gonna hate.
7. Title: It’s a Long Way to the Top
Artist: Lucinda Williams (AC/DC cover)
Album (year): Little Honey (2008)
Submitted By: @mikeorren
Comments: I’m a cover junkie. But for me this one surpasses all and transcends the original.
8. Title: (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
Artist: Devo
Album (year): Greatest Hits (1990)
Submitted by: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: I first heard this on Saturday Night Live back in the late 70s. I was floored by this version of the Stones’ hit. It was probably the first cover where I realized a band could reinvent a song in their own style and make it even better. I loved it. My friends hated it.
9. Title: Wonderwall
Artist: Ryan Adams
Album (year): Love Is Hell, Pt. 1 (EP) (2003)
Submitted by: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: I always thought the Oasis version was kind of a whiny and unimpressive affair. Ryan took the song to a new place of absolute, aching love. I was driving to work when this song started playing. I pulled over to the side of the road to listen to it over and over. Ryan owns this song now and it is better for it.
10. Title: Fearless
Artist: Gerald Collier
Album (year): Gerald Collier (1998)
Submitted by: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: Gerald Collier pops up again. Gerald usually has at least one cover on each of his albums. I’m a fan of early-ish Pink Floyd. Though it is not a reinvention of Pink Floyd’s version, I thoroughly enjoy Gerald’s take on it.
11. Title: Ooby Dooby
Artist: Creedence Clearwater Revival
Album: Cosmo’s Factory
Submitted by: Brad
Comments: Originally done by Roy Orbison, but written by my English prof in the late 70s, Dick Penner, at Sun Records in Memphis in 50s. Reading James Joyce, Joyce Cary, Virginia Woolf with Dick was a trip for me, part of what made me who I am. Dick told us he was in grad school at Duke in the 60s, when he walked out to the mailbox one day, and there was a hefty check from Creedence, who put the song on their Cosmo’s Factory album. He went out and bought a car and rented a new apartment that day. Love ya, man. You encapsulate everything that was good about my college education.
12. Title: Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis
Artist: Neko Case
Album (year): New Coat of Paint — Tom Waits Tribute (2000)
Submitted By: Mike Beebe
Comments: I truly love good cover songs. There are so, so many to choose from but this is the first one that came to mind. Gorgeous.
13. Title: Baby Blue
Artist: Jay Farrar
Album (Year): Bootleg (no clue)
Submitted By: @Rockstar_Aimz
Comments: In honor of the end of Breaking Bad, here’s my boyfriend Jay covering Badfinger. I think I got this boot off of the Son Volt message board.
14. Title: 99 Red Balloons
Artist: 7 Seconds
Album (Year): Walk Together, Rock Together (1985)
Submitted By: @Rockstar_Aimz
Comments: For all the straight edgers in the house. I think it was 1989 when I went with a bunch of high school buddies to a 7 Seconds show somewhere in rural Wisconsin. I got home after curfew, got in trouble, but it was totally worth it.
15. Title: Tombstone Blues
Artist: Richie Havens
Album (year): I’m Not There Soundtrack (2007)
Submitted By: @Rockstar_Aimz
Comments: I could easily submit 25 Bob Dylan covers. This one is my favorite. Havens is the man, and this is possibly the best Dylan cover next to Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower.”
16. Title: Last Nite
Artist: Adele
Album (year): BBC One Live Lounge with Jo Whiley (2008)
Submitted By: @Rockstar_Aimz
Comments: Adele covering The Strokes? Yes, and the results are awesome.
17. Title: Superstar
Artist: Sonic Youth
Album (year): If I Were a Carpenter (1994)
Submitted By: @Rockstar_Aimz
Comments: The true mark of an excellent cover is making the song nearly unrecognizable from the original. In other words, making it your own. Sonic Youth kills it with this cover/arrangement of The Carpenters, making it even more interesting when told from a man’s perspective.
18. Title: I Can’t Stand It
Artist: The Cramps
Album (year): Bad Music For Bad People (1990)
Submitted By: @annieTUFF
Comments: I chose this because it was one of my favorite songs that I had no idea was a cover until I started looking into it. The song was originally by Charlie Feathers. Also a solid choice because I think it’s pretty near impossible to listen to The Cramps without doin’ a little shimmy and shake.
19. Title: I Think We’re Alone Now
Artist: Screeching Weasel
Album (year): Kill The Musicians (1995)
Submitted By: @annieTUFF
Comments: This one is a fun cover because while it was originally a hit in 1967 by Tommy James and The Shondells, it’s probably most well known from the Tiffany version in 1987. BUT this cover is great, I don’t know how many times I actually listened to this version before I actually realized what Screeching Weasel was covering…which is pretty perfect.
20. Title: Halo (Beyonce Cover)
Artist: Port O’Brien
Year: 2009
Submitted By: Mad Mackerel Music Blog
Comments: Choosing your favourite cover is a harder task than most. Having selected and then rejected a huge number of possibilities, we eventually settled on the much-missed Port O’Brien and their cover of Beyonce’s Halo – different enough to be bold, faithful enough to be recognisable, yet with a undeniable PO’B stamp all over it. Superb. Although on another day, Phosphorescent’s sublime version of Lucinda Williams’ Big Red Sun Blues might just have pipped it….
21. Title: Speed of Sound of Loneliness
Artist: Alabama 3 (
Album (year): Exile on Coldharbour Lane (1997)
Submitted By: Simon
Comments: Not sure if I’ll get away with this, but submitting two versions of the same cover as A3 / Alabama 3 take on John Prine’s Speed of the Sound of Loneliness in two very distinct versions (parental guidance required)
22. Title: Speed of Sound of Loneliness
Artist: Alabama 3 (
Album (year): Last Train to Mashville Vol2 (2003)
Submitted By: Simon
Comments: Not sure if I’ll get away with this, but submitting two versions of the same cover as A3 / Alabama 3 take on John Prine’s Speed of the Sound of Loneliness in two very distinct versions (parental guidance required)
23. Title: Eye of the Tiger
Artist: Paul Anka
Album (year): Rock Swings (2006?)
Submitted by: Gorrck
Comment: always fun to put this kind of crap into a mix and see if anyone picks up on it. Also good for shutting down the party at 3a.m. when you need to sleep. You’ll thank me later.
24. Title: 8 Miles High
Artist: Husker Du
Album (year): 8 Miles High Single (1984)
Submitted By: Ryan
Comments: THIS is what a cover is all about – a totally fresh take on the song. Long live the Du!
25. Title: One More Try
Artist: The Silks
Album (year): debut single 2013
Submitted By: @scratchedsoul
Comments: These guys are out of Providence, RI and have been the revelation of the year for me. I first heard of them because I read Paul Westerberg was producing their debut record. Westerberg sings lead on the b-side to their debut single which is this Rolling Stones cover (from 1965′s Out of Our Heads). They just released their debut record ‘Last American Band’ which is chock full of bad-ass, straight-up rock and roll.

Jami Lynn & Dylan James - Cluck & Croon

Black Hills duo Jami Lynn & Dylan James met on the street in the summer of 2012. Their fortuitous meeting not only revealed their shared love of folk, bluegrass, and jazz, but marked the beginning of an ambitious duo project harnessing Jami’s powerful vocals and Dylan’s first rate flat-picking skills. After a few weeks of working up material, their hearts were set on a full length album featuring songs written by each. "Cluck & Croon" was released in April of 2013.
"Equal parts Carter Family, Billie Holiday, and Tin Pan Alley" as described by's Mat DiRiso. Lynn’s vocal prowess, delicate finger picking, and West Virginia style claw-hammer banjo blend seamlessly with James’s ringing tenor, driving guitar, and old-time fiddling. Their diverse instrumentation as well as their unique arrangements of traditional American folk songs and jazz numbers sets them on the edge of each genre.  The duo has graced stages with Chatham County Line, Casey Driessen, Paper Bird, The White Buffalo, Special Consensus, and clawhammer great Mark Johnson. Both are native South Dakotans and are currently based out of Rapid City, SD.

Listen: NEW Singles from Jus Post Bellum upcoming album "Oh July"

Brooklyn-based folk revivalists, Jus Post Bellum (Justice After War) mark the announcement of their upcoming sophomore album, Oh July, with the premiere of two singles "Gimme That Gun" and 'Abe and Johnny' Listen below.

Coming November 12, Oh July is more character study than sequence of songs, more history lesson wrapped in the present than a single song waiting for the internet to bring about buzz. Concepts aside, the songs at the foundation of Oh July are masterfully designed and bathed in the idyllic voices of Geoffrey Wilson and Hannah Jensen... both rising above concept through the heart-rending conduit of song.
Jus Post Bellum is the story of a man and a woman. An extended narrative. A character study, painted in broad strokes and finely etched. Jus Post Bellum is a man and a woman. A midwestern couple cohabiting in real life, looking towards the past for inspiration. A group of musicians, pulling upon the lessons of history, painting pictures in the present.

Track List:

Brooklyn's Jus Post Bellum share a second single, "Abe and Johnny", from their intimate forthcoming record, Oh July. Butchers of Sky Valley - Self-titled debut album

After six years in the making, indie blues-rock outfit Butchers of Sky Valley are releasing their eponymous self-titled debut album on November 5 via Heeled & Heavy Records. Check out the official lead single “Hold On, Heartbreak,” a tune that features a roaring riff rising out from a seductive hazy hook.
Lead singer Mike Mokotow describes the single as being “a testament to building up a real simple, catch groove to the very end and then letting it drop and release into something else. We wanted this to be the lead single because it’s a perfect introduction to the album, which is kind of like having Korean BBQ. You have all those great tasting different little plates come together so well and yet there’s this unexpected quality to it as a whole. That’s what I love about some of my favorite albums. But this song is one of our favorites to play live and is definitely one that keeps on fighting to make itself known on a pretty damn eclectic album.”

The backstory: “Underneath gusts of heavy distortion, bombastic blues, psychedelic soul and crooning vocals is a mysterious allure both infectious and indefinable.  Butchers of Sky Valley mine the past yet thrive in the present weaving their own signatures rooted in rock and wrangling lyrics. There’s a sense of intrigue inherent within the band – from the name (which Mokotow has hinted partly derives from the Kyuss classic Welcome to Sky Valley) – to the cinematic lyrics delivered with such depth and immediacy that it leaves the listener pondering the message behind each song.

“In 2007, singer Mokotow and the band’s former guitarist (and current studio partner) John Cosenza initially began writing songs together on a whim, bonding over their appreciation of  Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, early ZZ Top, The Dirty Three, Black Sabbath, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Queens of the Stone Age. The album slowly began to take shape over the course of six years. After Cosenza chose to step back from the band to take care of family obligations, Mokotow rounded out the line-up with guitarist Tim Brummer, bassist Jeff Knaster, and drummer Davis Rowan.”

Strange Daze - Shine Through

Eric Moudry ~ Guitar/vocals/primary songwriter -
Scott Knudson ~ Vocals/songwriter -
Chad Armstrong ~ Bass/vocals -
Mike Berg ~ Drums

Minneapolis’ Strange Daze knocks rock upside the head and rolls it over like the side of a cliff crashing into the sea. Electrifying, powerful and built for endurance, robust blues-rock riffs, anthemic soaring vocals and boisterous melodies their latest release, ‘Shine Through’ packs more punches than Cassius Clay vs Sonny Liston.

Strange Daze is Eric Moudry (guitars/vocals/primary songwriter), Scott Knudson (vocals/co-lyricist), Chad Armstrong (bass/vocals), and Mike Berg (drums).  The band’s fateful career moment came when engineer/producer Brian Johnson—who helmed the sessions for the band’s first two albums, passed along a CD to 38 Special keyboardist Bobby Capps. Impressed, Capps shared it with 3 Doors Down guitarist Chris Henderson, his partner in Nashville, TN-based Rivergate Studios. Capps immediately signed on to produce Strange Daze with Henderson’s and Johnson’s help.
Strange Daze is set to release its third album, Shine Through, on November 11, 2013, via Rock Ridge Music

Sans Abri - Debut 'Shelter'

Sans Abri, a side-project from Josh Erwin and Michael Paynter of Packway Handle Band from Athens, GA. The literal translation of “Sans Abri” is “without shelter.” The French use it as a term for “homeless.” In late 2011, Josh Erwin and Michael Paynter found themselves with a handful of new songs that didn’t have a home in The Packway Handle Band, the acclaimed bluegrass-based group from Athens, GA, that they co-founded.

So Sans Abri was launched as an outlet for this collaborative creativity, on their first release, Shelter the duo use a Cajon to loop live drum beats and alternately adding acoustic and electric guitar and mandolin, to tackle predicaments inherent in modern life, as on ‘The Scientist’ asks the difficult question, “Are we someone’s experiment?” now I for one often ponder this question, and with a day dreamy chorus the song combines satire with genuine curiosity to contemplate this puzzling question. The bouncy ‘Self Preservation’ with catchy mandolin riffs, jammy chords and has a really cool sing a long chorus. ‘Weights’ and ‘Winds Me Up’ have a mellowishous laid back contemplative vibe with great harmonies. ‘Every Turn !!!!!’ starts like a locomotive slowly working up steam, then turns into a rip roaring fast paced picking jive with a catchy chorus ‘Every turn was the wrong one’ On ‘One Pill A Day’ a tale of pharmaceutical-induced peace of mind, the mandolin and guitar work take center stage and shine.  A slapping back beat will have your head bobbing in rhythm on ‘Paid’
Throughout the mandolin and guitar work are exceptionally interlaced and the vocals moving and unique.

Shelter will be released October 29th on Twin Cousins Records.

New Release The Woodwards II

Peter Schuyff and Stevie Guy

To me The Woodwards conjure images of Kerouac, Burroughs and Ginsberg sittiing conspiratoraly in a corner, Iggy and Tom chat quietly over coffee and cigarettes, John Gibbon’s wanders around collecting pieces of found objects littered about, Diana di Prima and Hettie Jones slither from table to table in black turtlenecks and tights, random chatter flows like poetry mingling with thick billows of smoke.
Perhaps the fact that Peter spent two decades living in the famed Chelsea Hotel he has absorbed much of the vibe of its Beat Generation heyday, like being transported Peter Schuyff with prose like Leonard Cohen collaborating with Dyan and a voice like a laid back Lou Reed and Stevie Guy's beautifully delicate vocals, on The Woodwards magnificent 2nd release II, Peter uses words to paint pictures that bring the sights, sounds and feel of the beatniks into the new century. I think I’ll call it Beat Noir, the music flows with Morricone sounding riffs, echoing melodies and a myriad of percussion toys weaving delicious melodic songs.

The Woodwards II will be released on November 4th on iTunes
